Your Words Matter

You is important.

Have you ever read the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett? One of my favorite parts of the book is where Aibileen, the family maid, stands little Mae Mobley in front of her and says, “You is kind. You is smart. You is important.” This same little girl who is bombarded by negative messages from her mother on an almost-hourly basis is having life-giving words of affirmation spoken over her as well.

What kind of words are you speaking, not just to others, but to yourself? I would like to be able to say that I’m always a blessing to others and that I always Love Notesspeak kind words, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. Is anyone able to do that all the time? I do try to watch my words and affirm and encourage others, and I try to abide by what Thumper’s Mom says in the movie Bambi, “If you can’t say nothin’ nice don’t say nothin’ at all.” Some days that’s easier than others….I especially have to watch myself when I’m feeling really crappy, because my words reflect my attitude, which is also usually  terrible on those days.

Let’s talk about how we speak to ourselves, though. Do you find that you’re your own harshest critic? I know I certainly am! I seem to be able to give grace to others, but not to myself. I can’t count the number of times I’ve said things to myself that I would never say to someone else. I’m learning, though, that this doesn’t serve me well in any capacity, and I am letting go of the negative self-talk. I’m learning that I am a person of worth, that I am so much more than this cluster of symptoms that sometimes seems to be robbing me of my life. I may not be the person I once was, but with God’s help, I can be an even better person now.

If you haven’t already, would you join me in letting go of the negative self-talk? “You is kind. You is smart. You is IMPORTANT.”

  1. That’s my favourite part too! I tell my children positive things all the time,
funny that I too struggle with doing that myself. Thank you for this brilliant post and the positive words for myself 🙂
